Soooo imagine the base cabinets matching the uppers in that first pic and you’ll know what this looked like when we moved in. Sort of.

Not complete, we’re installing open shelves in the in betweens. And yes I probably should have painted the walls first but it is what it is.

Also, I am absolutely wearing appropriate footwear as I believe flip flops are for any occasion for ME. And no toes were injured.

Idk how I expected him to respond, I didn’t have a moment to think about it before he licked me.

And my face couldn’t be more joyful.

That’s Russell.
And that’s us.
Unorthodox.
Status quo thrown out long ago. Before we met.
He makes me laugh like no other.
He makes me smile with my whole self.
He amazes me on how much I couldn’t be happier when he isn’t at all what I pictured.
Just like how a lick on the face while cold plunging was not what I pictured I’d paint to depict joy.

Joy is rarely the most “perfect” image.
It is never the staged one.
It happens in the candid moments.
It comes whether you’re prepared or not.
I rather spend more time living than preparing what I’ll look like when it hits.
I’m so glad it was captured.

In 2020, after an unreasonable gap in painting, I decided to surprise a friend.

I chose a photo of how I remembered her when I lived close - smiling widely, on the water, in her faded Nike hat and sunglasses.

In my mind, this is Lisa. The one who got us out on Monterey Bay all day kayaking with a group of wonderful people; bonfires on the beach and tories told by lovely, irreverent women.

I only lived there 3 years and it wasn’t a lot of time to make deep connections, at least not for me. So those outings may have been more enjoyable for me than she realized.

Around the time I began her portrait I then learned that she had received a cancer diagnosis.

I will never again kayak with that Lisa. Her fight made her stronger, her hair grew back changed, and her beauty has morphed her into a new, equally wonderful version of her.

This portrait, to me, will always be Lisa.
And I may need to paint her again.

Last night, I unboxed a package that had been taped up and sealed through my last couple of moves.

I knew what was inside, under layers of bubble wrap and cardboard.

Happy 54th wedding anniversary grandma and grandpa.”

6 days late.

They would celebrate another 10 anniversaries together.

This was the summer before my senior year of high school.

25 years have passed since.

It feels closer to 10. Or less.

This was likely the first painting I completed after becoming a mom.

It was given back to me after Busia passed.
Boxed up until it had a permanent place.

Fixing up the kitchen area of my studio to help maximize storage, and he’s always going above and beyond - refinishing and designing new cabinet doors 🥰

We bought used cabinets and I was going to leave them as they are for now, but @the1russell installed and built the countertops so now they need to look perfect 👌🏼.

Happy 4th birthday to 3 kittens who took over my home! 🥳 Born into the box that E made cozy for their mommy, which she actually used when the time came.

No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 - like Code Name Kids Next Door 😅
We weren’t going to keep them.
Luna wasn’t my cat (but she stayed too - the cat distribution system has spoken and she is mine).
They had numbers, not names, so I wouldn’t get attached.

And now I’m handing over $2k for emergency surgery because they’re family 🤷🏼‍♀️

No. 1 = Alex because she climbs everything all the time…
No. 2 = Jane, Jane Bond Gato, aka Fat Jane, but she’s sneaky.
No. 3 = Fizzgig after the fluffy pet in The Dark Crystal.

This has been a journey long in the making 🎨 and I look forward to seeing and talking with you all!

I think the first painted portrait I ever did was of painter Henri Rousseau. I chose a black and white photo that I then did on a black background. 8th grade project. I recall someone saying black and white was typically considered more difficult. But I was already knee deep into that painting and no one had told me yet to see it as more difficult so I didn’t. To this day I secretly love working on black backgrounds.

This morning Russell was trying to get Fig to make a decision bewteen inside or outside. He was clearly torn, and then he saw me. He promptly placed himself at my side and sat, proud and smiling like the good boy he is. It was such a clear demonstration of, “I choose you!” And it made my day 🥰.

Sass very clearly overheard me telling Fig I’ll never question his love for me like I do with her sometimes (she’s moody 🤷🏼‍♀️). She jumped into my work chair and proceeded to bombard me with Sassafras love 😂. She needed to tell me, “I DO LOVE YOU, MOM!!!”

This morning Russell was trying to get Fig to make a decision bewteen inside or outside. He was clearly torn, and then he saw me. He promptly placed himself at my side and sat, proud and smiling like the good boy he is. It was such a clear demonstration of, “I choose you!” And it made my day 🥰.

I will add he is his most vocal when he needs space and Sass isn’t giving it. He comes up to me and voices ALL his grievances and I can’t help but sympathize.

The first time I celebrated your birthday with you, there were tutus involved. The second year, a belated apron. (Where is that apron?) The third… perhaps no new clothing, but the unpacking of it all in a new home. Tomorrow, I’ll be sure to dress you up when we go out 😉.

I’m not sure why clothing came to mind while writing this, your taste sure is unique when it comes to that, and the complete opposite of mine. Maybe that’s the point.

I could list a hundred things off the top of my head if which we are opposites on. Many of them to do with taste. Many more to do with how we opperate. In a similar vain, when I think back, there were so many reasons I thought that you were not the one. Until I thought you were. Because of all those reasons and ways, not one of them mattered.

He spent 4 days there and was eager to go back every day. The feedback I received about how he problem solved, posing solutions on how to navigate the build, and his positive attitude throughout it all are invaluable. Not to mention the all skills he learned.
